Lucknow: In a major push to tackle growing traffic congestion in urban areas, the Uttar Pradesh government has unveiled plans to expand metro rail networks and develop new parking infrastructure in three major cities—Lucknow, Kanpur, and Agra. The initiative aims to improve urban mobility, reduce traffic bottlenecks, and create a more efficient public transportation system.
According to a comprehensive report prepared by the state government, metro expansion has been proposed over a total network of 170 kilometres in Lucknow, 83 kilometres in Kanpur, and 89 kilometres in Agra. The project is expected to significantly strengthen public transport connectivity and encourage greater use of mass transit systems.
DPR Preparation Underway
Officials from Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) have confirmed that work on the Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) has already begun. The proposed plans include not only metro corridor expansion but also the development of integrated parking facilities around metro stations.
Senior officials stated that the DPRs will incorporate both surface parking and multi-level parking structures, depending on available space and local requirements. The objective is to facilitate seamless last-mile connectivity while discouraging roadside parking that often contributes to traffic congestion.
Sixty New Parking Facilities Proposed
As part of the urban mobility strategy, a total of 60 new parking facilities are proposed across the three cities. The plan includes:
- 17 parking facilities in Lucknow
- 24 parking facilities in Kanpur
- 19 parking facilities in Agra
These parking hubs will be developed and operated by local municipal corporations and development authorities. Authorities believe that dedicated parking infrastructure will help reduce the number of vehicles parked on roadsides, thereby improving traffic flow and road safety.
The proposal has been shared with divisional commissioners of the three cities, while copies have also been forwarded to the state’s housing, urban development, tourism, and transport departments for further coordination.
Metro Trial Continues in Kanpur
Meanwhile, progress is also being made on the ongoing metro expansion in Kanpur. Trial runs are currently underway on the extended route between Kanpur Central and Naubasta. The testing phase, which has been continuing for the past several days, is being monitored by a four-member technical team from the Metro Rail Safety Commission.
Officials expect the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) to conduct a final inspection next week. Subject to regulatory approval, passenger services on the extended corridor are expected to commence soon.
Towards Congestion-Free Cities
The proposed metro expansion and parking development projects form part of the Uttar Pradesh government’s broader vision to create congestion-free, commuter-friendly cities. By strengthening public transportation networks and improving parking management, the state aims to reduce travel time, enhance urban connectivity, and support sustainable urban growth.
Urban planners view the initiative as a significant step toward transforming Lucknow, Kanpur, and Agra into more accessible and efficient metropolitan centres capable of meeting the transportation needs of their growing populations.
